Pakistan Relations with Afghanistan: Post Taliban Era: Current Affairs by ENSEMBLE CSS ACADEMY |
Afghanistan is entirely under the control of the Taliban currently. Meanwhile, American forces, following the events of 9/11, subjugated it in the past. Unfortunately, the Taliban regime is back with its old propaganda and is troublesome in girls' education. Their claims about women's rights are just a cock and bull story.
There is a sense of relative peace in the region. At the same time, Afghanistan is witnessing a great leap backward as fundamental human rights are severely curtailed. The international community community shows no sign of recognizing The Taliban Government formally because of the constant violation of their promises.
Thus, a year later, the country continues to face international isolation as the Taliban, who favor a strict interpretation of religious law, are back on their pledges to moderate their stance on women's education and women in government offices, among other things.
The regime is back in past action; Taliban officials create issues for women from traveling in taxis, unless a male family member accompanies them, for a distance greater than 72 kilometers. Such actions were framed and enforced by the Taliban regime of Mullah Omar before 9/11.
While under international pressure, the Taliban claimed earlier to reopen high schools for girls but reversed their decision quickly, shattering the dreams and aspirations of a million girl students.
The rationale of the Taliban's education authorities is to promote Islamic principles in every institution, including education. Whereas there isn't any restriction on education for any individual regardless of gender in Islam, they are just molding Islamic principles in the wrong direction to promote their propaganda.
Clearly, this reversal of the decision to reopen the girls' high school shows the pressure of the council meeting. Meanwhile, in their ongoing attempt to stamp their conservative writ, the regime imposes restrictions on the media in the country. It cracks down on peaceful protests showing there is no freedom of speech.
Such moves only make one clear: the Taliban want their obscurantist views to prevail over the international communityCommunity. And are not clear with their stance, only playing cat and mouse with the world.
Such an approach already increases multiple economic, social, and political challenges.
There seems to be an increase in hurdles in Afghanistan's ongoing problem. Afghanistan remains isolated from the rest of the world for showing non-willingness to accept a retrogressive regime that thwarts fundamental human rights and equal rights for women. Despite some humanitarian aid from the international communityCommunity, which helped a little. While increasing international isolation will only worsen the regime's predicament.
The Taliban's U-turn on ensuring girls' education is a necessary condition for potential donors if Afghanistan is to receive foreign aid and recognition.
The reports of transnational militant groups resurface in Afghanistan and present a severe threat to regional security. The presence of Al Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri in Kabul, where he lived under the protection of the Taliban interior minister, shows Afghanistan is once again becoming the center of militant activities.
Zawahiri's video and audio messages increased suspicions about his presence in the country. His killing severely blew the Taliban government's commitment to the international communityCommunity to not allow any militant activity on Afghan soil.
A faction of the Taliban refuses to break its ties with the global terrorist network.
Besides Al Qaeda, there are militant groups like the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the East Turkestan Islamic Movement that continue to use Afghanistan as a base for their cross-border operations and are a source of grave concern to Islamabad and Beijing, the two capitals which urged the international communityCommunity to maintain close contact with the Taliban administration.
There seems to be an increase in militant activities attributed to the TTP in Pakistan's former tribal regions and other parts of KP. During the militant attacks, Pakistani soldiers lost their lives over the past year. Instead of taking action against the terrorist sanctuaries, the Taliban asks Pakistan to negotiate peace with the terrorist group. However, The TTP is under the protection of the Haqqani faction of the Afghan Taliban. This is a serious threat to Pakistan's security.
The time is not far, rising public discontent takes the form of a strong movement, and once again, the game will start from zero in the form of solid instability. Furthermore, the Taliban's protection of transnational militant groups will also increase international isolation in the future. And the cycle of puzzled Afghanistan.
